If you’re a new or returning international student, we can support you with the cost of mandatory testing or quarantine required under government rules for entry into the UK when you travel to York for the first time.
For the academic year 2021/22, this would be a refund for either your managed quarantine accommodation or your Day 2 (and Day 8 if required) Covid-19 tests after your arrival in the UK. We will cover this cost ONCE during the academic year, when you travel to York for the first time. So for example, we would cover your costs if:
We would not cover your costs if you are already in the UK at the start of the academic year 2021/22 but choose to travel home, for example during a vacation. If you’re not sure whether your costs would be covered, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with details as soon as possible.
The testing or quarantine package you will need to book is dependent on whether you qualify under the fully vaccinated rules for travel to UK or whether you are coming from a ‘Red list’ country. Further details can be found on the Government web pages on the rules for entering England.
For the academic year 2021/22, the University will refund international students the cost of one of the following:
Day 2 (and Day 8 if required) Covid-19 tests
You can now use a variety of providers for obtaining your Day 2 and Day 8 Tests and the cost is variable. We will only refund your Day 2 (and Day 8 if required) tests up to the value of £210, so please choose your provider carefully. If you choose tests that are more expensive, we will not refund the excess above £210. Those who do not qualify under the fully vaccinated rules need to book two PCR tests, to be taken on day 2 and 8 of their quarantine period, while those who do qualify under the fully vaccinated rules only need to book one test that is taken on or before day 2 of their arrival in the UK.
Managed quarantine hotel accommodation (£1,750, or £2,285 if arriving from 12 August, + any additional days, 'Red' arrivals only)
Managed quarantine hotel accommodation is only required for students who travel from, or through, a country on the Government banned travel list ('red list').
For students over the age of 18, we will only refund the cost for the student, not for any partners, spouses or dependents. We will refund the cost of any additional days required if you test positive.
For students under the age of 18, UK government travel guidance requires that you travel with a parent or guardian and that they enter managed quarantine with you on arrival. We will refund the additional cost of one parent or guardian accompanying a student in managed quarantine (£650, or £1,430 if arriving from 12 August).
Refunds will be via electronic funds transfer only (not via cheque or cash).
It is strongly recommended where possible that students choose to refund to a UK bank account in order to receive the full value of the refund.
Refunds to international bank accounts are possible, but will be subject to currency exchange rates and any other charges levied by your financial institution for international payments. In addition, any payments that fail due to incorrect bank details entered by the student may be liable to further charges.
Refunds will not be processed for payment before the date of travel.
Refunds will be given for quarantine costs incurred in the past three months (taken from the date on the receipt).
We will aim to process your refund within 7-14 days. The time taken will vary depending upon in which country the nominated bank account is held.
