Update on supporting your exams and assessments - 18 Dec 2020
As we reach the end of term we want to wish you a safe and enjoyable festive break. This has been a year like no other and we are so proud of what our students have achieved during such a challenging time. We look forward to welcoming you back in the New Year, and we appreciate that many of you will also be working on assessments and preparing for examinations at the start of Spring term.
We wanted to reassure you that in this truly extraordinary time, the University and your Students’ Unions are working together to ensure that you have the right levels of support if you need more time to prepare your assignments, or need to defer them to the later in the year. For any students needing to apply for exceptional circumstances for reasons including Covid restrictions, the University in partnership with the Students' Unions has taken the decision to relax the evidence requirements of the exceptional circumstances policy.
We know it may be difficult to obtain evidence, and because of this we are allowing students to self-certify when they are unable to provide the evidence we would usually require - we just ask you to note the reason why in your application. You can find more information about this in the policy on Exceptional Circumstances and additional guidance on the kind of support you might want to include in your application - both are available online.
We are also working together to consider other ways to ensure that your degree results will not be adversely impacted by the effects of Covid; we have very promising proposals to this end currently being considered by the Students’ Unions and our academic colleagues. At the same time, we need to make sure that any changes we make don’t result in the degree you are working so hard for (in the context of a global health crisis) being worth less in the long run. It's important to ensure that we get the balance right, and once plans are announced, we want to be sure that the appropriate colleagues are around to answer any questions you might have, but we expect to have more news early in the new year.
Warmest wishes from all of us at the University and all the best for the New Year.
