Update to new students starting at York in January 2021

In 2020/21, our taught postgraduate academic year has two different start dates - one in September and one in January. For more information, visit our welcome pages.

For students starting with us in January 2021, we emailed you on 22 December with an update, following media reports about tougher restrictions for parts of England and the introduction of a new Tier 4: ‘Stay at Home’ alert level.

This email covered:

  • An update about the City of York, including the University of York campus, which remains in a lower tier area with fewer restrictions;

  • Your official start date of 11 January and the range of welcome and induction events throughout this week. Teaching will commence from 18 January and your department will be in touch soon to provide you with more details (Theatre, Film, Television and Interactive Media (TFTI) students please note your specific arrangements).

  • Further details if you are concerned in any way about being able to travel to York for the start of term. When you are able to travel, you can let us know and we’ll make sure we are ready for your arrival;

  • Supporting your arrival in the UK and access to accommodation;

  • Letting us know that you are self-isolating (quarantining) by completing the University self-isolation form, so that we can provide further advice about testing, as well as practical, emotional and social support to you;

  • Your choices, including deferring your studies to September 2021 if you choose, but we would encourage you to consider starting online with a view to transitioning to campus in York in the coming weeks and months.

Our Vice-Chancellor, Charlie Jeffrey, also recorded a video message for you - this is available to watch on YouTube and Bilibili.

We look forward to welcoming you to the University of York.
