Asking to study online in 2020/21
Some of you have asked whether you can opt to study online only in the coming academic year, even though you've registered for a campus-based course. This is our approach.
York is an active and vibrant University - we provide an excellent campus based education as well as delivering some programmes at a distance. If your programme is campus-based, we look forward to welcoming you to York.
In the coming academic year we aim to provide as much face to face teaching as possible in our safe and welcoming campus. This will be supplemented with online learning provision until such point as any relaxation of rules on social distancing allows. As a student who has registered for a campus based programme we expect you to benefit from as much classroom experience as we are able to provide. We are also planning an exciting start to term with events and activities to get you meeting new people, reconnecting with friends and giving you opportunities to try things you’ve not done before. We all hope that over the year we will be able to increase further the amount of face to face engagement and social activities that we are able to offer, as and when Covid19 is brought under control.
We do understand that some students will not be able to join us in York, due to circumstances beyond their control as a result of Covid 19 – for example the impact of travel restrictions or because their health situation requires them to shield or enter a period of self-isolation. If you are in this position we will do our utmost to help you to maintain a strong connection to the University community and your programme of study through online options that will allow you to engage with your learning and assessment.
So we will expect you and support you to be here. Our usual requirement is that taught students live within 40 miles of campus; however, if it is impossible for you to join us in person, we will be flexible in relaxing this requirement for the 2020/21 academic year. As the year starts, you will need to tell us if you are in this position so that we can support you effectively. If you are able to return to the full on-campus experience before the end of the academic year you will be supported to do this wherever possible.
