Important Covid update
I am sure many of you will have seen the UK Government announcements about the new temporary and precautionary measures in light of the new Covid-19 variant, now known as Omicron.
Our campus measures have played an incredibly important role in keeping staff and students safe this term, and our Covid-19 cases have remained low. I have today written to students outlining the new Government measures, and the need to keep following our guidance and recommendations.
This includes wearing face coverings during teaching sessions and when moving around buildings. We know the Department of Education has now also strongly advised this, and our face coverings policy is being reviewed to also reflect the new UK Government policy about mandatory face coverings in shops and on public transport.
Another key action is the need to keep testing. Thank you to everyone taking regular Covid-19 tests this term. I cannot stress enough how important this is.
Monitoring the situation
Whilst the Government is at this point not moving to its full ‘Plan B’, all the indications are that its priority will be to maintain in-person education, including at universities, even if it were to move to implement Plan B contingency measures.
Given the end of term is now upon us, we have advised all students to keep checking email over the winter break, in case of any new action we may need to take.
In the meantime, we will keep our guidance and policies under review in light of any new understanding about this variant, and monitor Government advice to help inform our decisions.
