Thank you and good news

Dear student,

Firstly, I would like to thank you for a smooth and safe return to York. It is great to see students on campus enjoying themselves whilst following COVID-19 secure guidance.

Secondly, I wish to share some good news. There will be a new COVID-19 testing facility constructed on campus later this week. The walk-through facility will be located in a segregated and managed area in the Wentworth Way car park.

Open from 8 am to 8 pm, seven days a week, this new facility adds to the existing testing provisions for the City of York. Operating on an appointment-only basis from Thursday 1 October, the site is part of the Government’s UK-wide drive to improve the accessibility of coronavirus testing for local communities.

If you have symptoms - a high temperature, a new, continuous cough, or a loss or change to sense of smell or taste - you should book a test through the NHS COVID-19 App, the nhs.uk/coronavirus website or by telephoning 119.

You should also self-isolate and complete the Student COVID-19 self-isolation reporting form so that we can support you and provide advice on accessing food and supplies. We can also help you access a test if you have not been able to do so yourself. There is more self-isolation guidance on our COVID-19 web pages.

If you test positive for COVID-19, we will work with you and with health authorities to identify and contact other people who may also need to self-isolate.

Further information about how to stay smart, supportive and safe can be found on our web pages.

Lastly, if media coverage has made you anxious about the impact safety measures could have on the Christmas holidays, we would like to reassure you. Our teaching term finishes on Friday 4 December and we will do all we can to enable students to get home. We have been voicing our concerns to the government and are pleased to see a change in the messages coming out of parliament earlier today.

Thank you again, I know that things are not as straightforward as we would all like and I appreciate your continued understanding, cooperation and commitment.

Best wishes

Charlie Jeffery

Vice Chancellor
